Shed and workshop wiring.
A shed is only useful if you can see in it and run things in it. Kayden wires machinery sheds, workshops, hay sheds and stables from the switchboard out: lighting you can work under at night, enough power points that you're not running leads across the floor, and three-phase for the welder, compressor or cool room if the job calls for it.

In short
Shed wiring means running power from the house to a shed or workshop and fitting it out with lighting, power points and, where the supply allows, three-phase. We wire machinery sheds, workshops and hay sheds across Dungog, Gresford and the Hunter.

Most shed jobs start with the run from the house. That's often the biggest part of the work and the part that decides what the shed can do later, so it gets sized for what you might add, not just what you're plugging in this year.
What the job involves
- A sub-main from the house board or a new board at the shed, sized for the load and the distance
- LED high-bay or batten lighting laid out for the way the shed is actually used, with switching at the doors
- Power points on their own circuits, including 15 amp outlets for welders and compressors
- Three-phase outlets and isolators for machinery where the supply allows
- Safety switches on every circuit, and a board you can read without a torch
- Outdoor and sensor lighting on the yard side
When you need it
- You're running the shed off one extension lead from the house
- The lights are old fluoros that flicker or won't start at all
- A welder or compressor keeps tripping the house board
- You've built or extended a shed and it has no power yet
What changes the price
- The distance from the house to the shed, and whether the run goes overhead or underground
- Whether the existing board has the capacity, or needs an upgrade first
- How many lights and outlets, and whether any machinery needs three-phase
- Access for trenching: open paddock is quick, a concrete driveway is not
What NSW requires
- Every new circuit in NSW needs safety switch protection, including shed circuits
- Outdoor and shed fittings have to be rated for the location: dust, damp and the odd knock
- A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is lodged for the job and you get a copy
- If the shed needs more supply than the property has, the network provider is involved and that's a separate step Kayden walks you through
What Kayden needs from you to quote
- A photo of your house switchboard with the lid open
- A rough distance from the house to the shed and what's in between
- What you want to run in there now, and what you might add later
Questions about shed and workshop wiring
How far can you run power from the house to a shed?
As far as you need. The limit is cost, not distance: the longer the run, the bigger the cable has to be so the voltage holds up at the shed. Kayden sizes it for the distance and for what you'll run, so the lights don't dim when the welder starts.
Do I need a separate switchboard in the shed?
Usually, for anything more than a couple of lights and points. A small board at the shed gives each circuit its own safety switch and lets you isolate the shed without walking back to the house.
Can I get three-phase in my shed?
Yes, if the property has three-phase supply. If it only has single-phase, the network provider has to upgrade the supply first. Text Kayden a photo of your meter box and he'll tell you which you have.
