Hot water systems.

When an electric hot water system fails it's usually the element or the thermostat, and both are repairable. When the tank goes, it's a replacement, and the new unit needs to be connected on its own circuit and certified. Kayden does both, and works in with your plumber on replacements.

Heat pump hot water systems are increasingly common on properties with solar or high power bills. They're still an electrical connection and the same rules apply.

What the job involves

  • Element and thermostat replacement on storage systems
  • Connection of new storage, instantaneous and heat pump units
  • A dedicated circuit and isolator where one doesn't exist
  • Off-peak or controlled-load connection where the meter supports it
  • Fault finding on systems that trip or run cold

When you need it

  • No hot water, or hot water that doesn't last
  • The safety switch trips when the hot water comes on
  • A new unit that needs connecting

What changes the price

  • Repair versus replacement
  • Whether a dedicated circuit already exists
  • Distance from the board to the unit

What NSW requires

  • Hot water units need their own circuit with an isolator at the unit
  • Element and thermostat work must be done by a licensed electrician in NSW
  • A Certificate of Compliance is lodged for connections

What Kayden needs from you to quote

  • A photo of the unit's rating plate and of the switchboard
  • Whether it's a repair or you're replacing the system

Questions about hot water systems

Why has my electric hot water gone cold?

Usually a failed element or thermostat, or a tripped safety switch or fuse. All three are fixable. If the tank itself is leaking, it's a replacement.

Do you replace the whole system?

Kayden does the electrical side: the circuit, the isolator and the connection. Tank replacements are usually done with a plumber, and Kayden works in with yours.

Can a heat pump hot water system use my existing circuit?

Often, but not always. It depends on the unit's rating and the existing circuit. A photo of the unit's rating plate and your switchboard lets Kayden check.
