Pump and irrigation electrical.

A pump that stops in a dry spell is a problem that costs more every hour. Kayden wires river and dam pumps, pressure pumps, transfer pumps and irrigation controllers, and sets up the protection that stops a motor burning out when something goes wrong.

In short

Pump work is as much about control as it is about cable: float switches, pressure switches, timers and soft starters that let a big motor start without dropping the lights in the house.

What the job involves

  • Supply to the pump shed, overhead or underground
  • Motor protection: overloads, phase failure and dry-run protection where it's warranted
  • Soft starters or variable speed drives for larger pumps
  • Float, pressure and level switches, timers and irrigation controllers
  • Isolators at the pump so it can be worked on safely
  • Fault finding on pumps that trip, hum, or won't start

When you need it

  • The pump trips the board or blows fuses when it starts
  • It runs but the pressure is wrong, or it won't shut off
  • You've moved or replaced a pump and the old wiring doesn't suit it
  • You want the irrigation to run on a schedule without you standing there

What changes the price

  • The size of the motor and whether it's single or three-phase
  • How far the pump is from the nearest supply
  • Whether it needs a soft starter or drive, which depends on the motor and the supply
  • The level of control you want: a switch, a timer, or a controller with sensors

What NSW requires

  • Pump circuits need safety switch protection and an isolator you can reach
  • Equipment near water has to be rated and installed for a wet location
  • Motor protection is sized to the motor, not guessed, so the nameplate matters
  • A Certificate of Compliance is lodged for the installation

What Kayden needs from you to quote

  • A photo of the pump nameplate and of the existing control box if there is one
  • Where the pump sits relative to the house or shed
  • What's going wrong, in your words

Questions about pump and irrigation electrical

Why does my pump trip the power when it starts?

Usually because the motor draws a big surge of current on start-up, or because of a fault in the motor, the cable or the pressure switch. Kayden tests to find which. A soft starter or a correctly sized circuit often fixes a surge problem.

Can you wire a pump a long way from the house?

Yes. Long runs are normal on properties. The cable is sized for the distance so the motor gets full voltage, and it goes underground in conduit or overhead depending on the ground.

What should I send to get a quote on pump wiring?

A photo of the pump's nameplate, a photo of the existing control box if there is one, and roughly where the pump sits relative to the house or shed. That's usually enough for a price.
