Fault finding and repairs.

Electrical faults rarely announce themselves clearly. A breaker that trips once a week, a power point that works on some days, lights that dim when the pump starts, a warm smell near the board. Kayden's job is to find the cause, not just reset the breaker, and to explain what he found in plain words.

In short

Electrical fault finding means tracing why a breaker or safety switch trips, a circuit has died or lights flicker, then repairing the cause rather than resetting the breaker. We find and fix electrical faults across Dungog, Gresford and the Hunter.

Fault finding is methodical: isolate circuits, test, narrow it down. On farms the cause is often a long way from the symptom, which is where knowing rural installations pays off.

What the job involves

  • Testing to find which circuit and which part of it is faulty
  • Repairing or replacing the damaged cable, fitting, outlet or breaker
  • Checking the rest of the circuit so the same thing doesn't happen next month
  • A straight explanation of what caused it and whether anything else needs attention

When you need it

  • A breaker or safety switch that trips, especially in wet weather or when a particular appliance runs
  • Power points or lights that have stopped working
  • Flickering, buzzing, or a burning smell
  • Scorch marks on a power point or switch
  • Lights that dim when a motor starts

What changes the price

  • How long it takes to find, which is why a clear description of when it happens helps
  • What's failed and whether it's a fitting or a cable run
  • Access, especially in ceilings and under floors

What NSW requires

  • Anything that's repaired or replaced has to meet the current standard, even if the original didn't
  • Repairs are covered by a Certificate of Compliance when they involve new work
  • If a fault is on the network side of the meter, it's the network provider's job and Kayden will tell you who to call

What Kayden needs from you to quote

  • When it happens and what's running at the time
  • A photo of the board and of any scorched or damaged fitting
  • Whether it's happened before and what was done

Questions about fault finding and repairs

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

It's detecting current leaking to earth. Common causes are a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor fitting, or damaged cable. Unplug everything and reset it: if it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it won't hold with everything unplugged, call an electrician.

Is a burning smell from a power point an emergency?

Treat it as one. Turn that circuit off at the board, don't use the outlet, and call. If there's smoke or flame, get out and call 000 first.

Can you find faults that come and go?

Yes, though they take longer. The more you can say about when it happens, such as wet weather, a particular appliance or a time of day, the faster Kayden can find it.
