Generator changeover switches.
When a storm takes the line out, a generator on an extension lead keeps the fridge going and not much else. A proper changeover switch lets you run the circuits you choose, the pump, the lights, the cold room, from the generator, through the house wiring, with the grid safely isolated.

In short
A generator changeover switch lets a house or farm run chosen circuits from a generator during a blackout, with the grid safely isolated so nothing feeds back into the network. We install manual and automatic changeovers around Dungog, Gresford and the Hunter.

The isolation is the point. Feeding a generator back into the network can injure the crews working to restore it, which is why changeovers have to be done properly and certified.
What the job involves
- A manual changeover switch at the switchboard, or an automatic one for a fixed generator
- An inlet socket outside so the generator connects with one lead
- Working out which circuits the generator can carry and wiring those to the changeover
- Testing the switch over under load so you know it works before you need it
When you need it
- You've lost power for more than a day in a storm and had no way to run the essentials
- You've got a generator but you're running leads through windows
- You run a pump, cold room or medical equipment that can't wait for the network
What changes the price
- Manual or automatic changeover
- The size of the generator and how many circuits you want on it
- Whether the switchboard has room, or needs work first
What NSW requires
- Generators connected to a house must go through a changeover that isolates the grid, by law and by the standard
- The generator inlet and lead have to be rated for the job
- A Certificate of Compliance is lodged
What Kayden needs from you to quote
- A photo of your switchboard and your generator's rating plate
- A list of what you'd want running during an outage
Questions about generator changeover switches
Why can't I just plug the generator into a power point?
Because it can send power back up the line to the network, which can injure the crews repairing it, and it can damage the generator and your appliances when the grid returns. A changeover switch isolates the grid first. Never back-feed through a power point.
Should I get a manual or automatic changeover?
Manual suits a portable generator you wheel out in a storm. Automatic suits a fixed generator that has to start and switch over on its own, for example for a cold room or medical equipment.
What can my generator run?
That depends on its rating. Kayden works out which circuits it can carry, usually the fridge, some lights, the pump and a few points, and wires those to the changeover.
